When coaches break their own recruiting advice

I need to tell you about a hypocritical thing college coaches do.

Every summer, they give recruiting advice to the families they recruit. Take your time. Ask good questions. Do your due diligence. Find the right fit.

Then, one coach makes a highly sought-after recruit an offer with a 48-hour deadline.

And suddenly, all the well-intentioned advice goes out the window.

The Domino Effect

Early offers aren’t necessarily bad - they help families get key information on the financial piece up front.

However, when deadlines are attached, things get messy quickly.

When School A makes an early offer with a deadline, it triggers a chain reaction:

School B (who has worked with the player, but wanted more time to evaluate) suddenly has to decide: make an offer or risk losing the recruit.

School C (who planned to bring the player for a visit first) now faces an impossible choice: offer sight unseen or watch them commit elsewhere.

The recruit - who was told to take their time - suddenly has just a couple of days to make a life-changing decision.
